Local SEO is an extension of this, but it is focussed on giving the users results that are more relevant to their current location. And this is most pertinent to showing places/locations in the proximity of the user.
Let me give you a quick example.
Say we search for ‘bread’, on Google. The SERP (Search Engine Results Page) looks something like this:
Nutrition facts about bread, the Wikipedia page about bread, they all show up, and Google showers me with all the information that I need about bread.
Now, let’s append a term which donates the location in which you are. Let’s say we search for ‘bread near me’.
Google understands that you are searching for places near you that make/provide/serve bread, so in other words, bread stores or bakeries. So it gives you the information that you need, pertaining to that area, near your location.
Google is immediately able to give the user(me, in this case) results that show bakeries in the proximity (near Washington, in this case) as soon as I type in a location based query. And this wouldn’t have been possible if Google had no idea about where these bakeries are located.
It’s imperative that Google is given information about the location of your business, amongst other things, to make sure that you show up on the results when a user keys in a location based query. But even after Google is given said information about business, the results have to be hierarchical. Google simply HAS to arrange them in a certain order. In such a scenario, there is a way to make sure that your business can show up on top of the results when the user searches for businesses like yours, in your proximity.
