Is AMP necessary?

I know Accelerated Mobile Pages provide website to load fast in mobile devices, even over slow networks, but I want to know is that necessary? If I do not use AMP then my website can’t rank high?

AMP is a Google-backed project with the aim of speeding up the delivery of content through the use of stripped down code known as AMP HTML.

AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages, a Google-backed project designed as an open standard for any publisher to have pages load quickly on mobile devices. On Feb. 24, 2016, Google officially integrated AMP listings into its mobile search results.

AMP is important because it helps web pages load faster which potentially improves usability and convinces visitors to stay longer on your site engaging with your content. ... However, AMP doesn't improve engagement on its own. It doesn't make your content more useful or entertaining.
