A core update is basically a substantial change Google makes to its ranking algorithm which affects a large number of webpages that are indexed. On an average, it occurs once every two or three months.

The primary objective of core updates is to improve the relevance and the quality of search results in Google. So web pages which were ranking in higher positions may rank lower after a core update. Similarly, pages that were ranking lower might rank higher after the rollout.
